It is being aware and respectful of the values, beliefs, traditions, customs, and parenting styles of those we serve, while understanding that there is often as wide a range of differences within groups. It is being aware of how our own culture influences how we view others. If we fail to acknowledge the influence of culture on the work we do, we limit our ability to interact with and help families and children. To demonstrate competency of this objective, I will continue my own self assessment, complete a case evaluation including a cultural competence checklist and promote cultural competence by creating a monthly cultural topic to which I will email to each staff member of my field agency.
